Burn Injuries

Although burns are common injuries, they can be among the most painful and debilitating. Depending on the degree and location on the body, burns can be minor medical problems or life-threatening injuries, according to the Mayo Clinic.

The American Burn Association reports that in 2015, to date, an estimated 486,000 burn injuries have been medically treated in the U.S., with 40,000 people hospitalized for burn injuries, 30,000 of whom went to hospital burn centers.

“Burns can cause scarring, blistering, swelling, and in severe cases, shock or even death.”

At The Law Offices of Edward C. Casey Jr., we help people who have sustained serious burn injuries as result of an act of negligence. We take action to pursue the compensation they need to get their lives back on track. We provide high-quality representation to people who have been burned in a range of accidents, including:

Automobile Accidents
Burns are rare in auto accidents, but when they do occur, the damage is significant. One in four victims of burns from auto accidents die from those burns. Thermal burn injuries caused by external heat like fire, hot metal, or steam can present deep tissue damage. Recovery is expensive and extensive.
Building Fires
Building fires can happen at home or at the workplace or just about anywhere else. Fires can cause burns and smoke inhalation injuries, both of which can prove deadly or lead to long-term care and recovery.
Defective Product Accidents
Defective products can cause burns, including chemical or catastrophic burns that result in loss of mobility, muscle damage, brain damage, and lung damage. Examples include poor electrical wiring or the use of flammable materials.
Industrial Accidents
Many industrial workplaces expose workers to chemicals or situations where burns of varying types can result. Common industrial burns include thermal, electrical, chemical, caustic, cryogenic, and radiological burns––all of which are painful and potentially life-altering.
Hot Liquid Scalding Accidents
Hot, scalding liquids can cause serious pain, but more than that, an accident involving scalding liquids can damage affected tissues and cells and could lead to shock.
Electrical Accidents
Electrical burns damage skin, tissues, and major organs. As such, the range of damage depends on the severity of the burn; it could be minor, or it could be fatal.
Explosions
Explosions at work or at home are rare, but the consequences are stark. Thermal, chemical, and electrical burns are the most common. Recovery will depend on the type and extent of the burn.

The extent of medical treatment needed after burn injuries depends on what caused the burn, how much area it covers, and how deep the injury goes. There are 3 different types of burns:

  • FIRST DEGREE, WHICH DAMAGE ONLY THE OUTER LAYER OF SKIN;
  • SECOND DEGREE, WHICH DAMAGE BOTH THE OUTER LAYER AND THE LAYER OF SKIN UNDERNEATH; AND
  • THIRD DEGREE, WHICH DAMAGE ALL THE LAYERS OF SKIN AND THE TISSUE BENEATH THE SKIN.

Third-degree burns require emergency medical treatment. Skin grafting is necessary after many serious burn injuries, and these injuries are subject to infection due to the damage they cause to the protective barrier of the skin.
