The American Burn Association reports that in 2015, to date, an estimated 486,000 burn injuries have been medically treated in the U.S., with 40,000 people hospitalized for burn injuries, 30,000 of whom went to hospital burn centers.

Burns are rare in auto accidents, but when they do occur, the damage is significant. One in four victims of burns from auto accidents die from those burns. Explosions at work or at home are rare, but the consequences are stark. Thermal, chemical, and electrical burns are the most common. Recovery will depend on the type and extent of the burn.

The extent of medical treatment needed after burn injuries depends on what caused the burn, how much area it covers, and how deep the injury goes. There are 3 different types of burns:

  • FIRST DEGREE, WHICH DAMAGE ONLY THE OUTER LAYER OF SKIN;
  • SECOND DEGREE, WHICH DAMAGE BOTH THE OUTER LAYER AND THE LAYER OF SKIN UNDERNEATH; AND
  • THIRD DEGREE, WHICH DAMAGE ALL THE LAYERS OF SKIN AND THE TISSUE BENEATH THE SKIN.

Third-degree burns require emergency medical treatment. Skin grafting is necessary after many serious burn injuries, and these injuries are subject to infection due to the damage they cause to the protective barrier of the skin.

I was involved in a serious 2 car auto collision on 21 January 2011. A lady made a right turn from the left lane, on a surface street going roughly 40 to 45 mph. I was traveling in the right lane going roughly the same speed. She claimed that I was in her blind spot. I was seriously injured, My C-4 and C-5 were crushed, and I had a concussion.
